De-Saturated or Bright and Colorful?

It can be difficult choosing what you like. Generally, I ask my clients to send me a few photos that they really like (without them putting too much thought into it) and we go from there. From the pictures they send me I can usually tell from a few photos what they all have in common. Is it interactive? Focused on props? Is it posed and elegant, or is it candid and fun? Finally, is there consistency in the lighting and mood?

From there I consult with them what I have in mind. All of my clients are different, have different personalities, and enjoy different styles of photography. If a family is set on having fall photos, then we're going to create warm tones with fall leaves that compliment simple attire. If a senior in highschool wants to showcase that they skateboard, then we will consider a less saturated approach in a more urban area.

Don't worry. You are more than allowed to try out different things for different occasions. If you like the unsaturated, slightly-vintage look that is very popular right now, we can do that! If you want to be wild or just capture a simple play day in the park, that works! There are no rules, and they are YOUR photographs you are paying for. A lot of the mood in the final photos is created in post-production in Photoshop. However, the location and apparel you choose also take a large part in this as well.

For my next blog, I will talk about styling and location choices. :)

Colorful

There are some cases where color is necessary. It is best to express color when you want to document reality for what it is. Most portraiture with children and infants stays within the realm of "True to color." I find most people enjoy having this option, but are always curious to try out new styles as well.

Desaturated

Some people say that a partially desaturated look gives more emotion to a photograph. Others say it's just a current digital trend. I believe it is a style that evokes more intention within the photo and is something that I personally would be able to display in my home as artwork.
