How is pricing determined?

Free Consultation

The work begins from our first moment of contact. The consultation is extremely important for planning your photoshoot. It is a chance where you can express your desires, we can share inspiration, coordinate location and outfits and, of course, discuss pricing.

> WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Every photoshoot is different and I will offer my advice on styles if you'd like. Your decision of outfits should reflect your personality, be flattering, and also give subtle contrast to the background of the location.

Matching: Unless you are intentionally wanting to match, I suggest avoid it and instead finding complimentary outfits instead. I can provide you with some examples.

> WHAT IF IT RAINS OR SNOWS?
Unless you recommend a snow shoot, I will do my best to reschedule your session as quickly as possible. Always plan ahead by bringing proper attire to stay warm in between shooting periods and an umbrella to help you stay dry.

Equipment Requirements

Prices can vary depending on which equipment is necessary. Variables that determine what equipment is needed can include: Location, Time of Day, Quantity of people, etc. I prefer to use two cameras during the session that I meter and prepare beforehand for quick adjusting. If we are in a building, or lighting is a concern it may require the use of light boxes, flash equipment, reflectors, and more. Not only is equipment, editing software, and website hosting a large investment for a photographer, but it also adds a logistical element for transport, electrical needs, and so on.

Time, Location & Travel

A standard portrait session is one hour, with two outfits (optional), prices increase per hour.

I currently serve the Spokane area. Further travel can increase my rates depending on distance.

The Three Types of Editing

SIMPLE PHOTO EDITING
Examples include: Color correcting, cropping and resizing, and “batch filtering” often using presets in Lightroom.

PHOTO RETOUCHING
Examples include: Smoothing, blemish removal, glare removal, teeth whitening, etc.

SPECIALTY EDITING
This is what can set apart your photos. The most important part of capturing a successful photos are lighting, composition, camera settings and of course… capturing the right moments. However, there is peace of mind in knowing that you’ve hired someone who is proficient in this style of editing for when unforeseen events happen. These skills can also have the opportunity to transform a photograph into a surreal piece of art. One photo can take anywhere from 10 minutes even hours to edit, depending on how in-depth the final product needs to be.

Examples include: Foreground/Background manipulation, masking and layers, object removal, lighting effects, composite images and more. This process is more in-depth, but makes a huge difference when you need to manipulate specific parts of the photograph. For example, removing a distracting object in the photo that was unavoidable at the location, separating the subject from the background to create a bokeh effect with lighting, or having to composite multiple large group photos so that everyone looks their best when a child is distracted or a cousin had blinked.

The nerdy details: I can ensure you that I am very proficient in Photoshop and my editing focuses on non-destructive editing to maintain its quality of texture and other natural elements. I utilize channels, blend modes, and cohesive masking and more, right down to the pixel.

Final Deliverables

You will receive all 15 of your high quality photos, and you may choose more for additional cost. Along with your photos you will be given a photo release form giving you the ability to print them at a business of your choosing.

I do not currently provide in-house print services, but I have local printing companies that I strongly recommend you use for all of your printing needs. Their service is wonderful, their prices are competitive, and they produce much higher quality prints than the DIY corporation services. Plus you will be supporting our local community!

Experience

My photography education started with film cameras. I not only wasn't able to see my photos immediately, but had to develop the film and touch up the prints by hands in a lab. Some say it is a lost art, but it really taught me my way around aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and focus because it required confidence in my work. Without second chances, composition and lighting had to be perfect in that moment.

It is a time-consuming process to edit in Photoshop but it is what puts professional work ahead of the access to digital cameras in the modern world. The time you spend in front of a camera is a small fraction of the time that a photographer is working on your photo package.

I have provided photography for numerous satisfied clients, and have received a Gold American Advertising Award for a documentary series in 2018. I not only studied Film and Photography in Chicago, but furthered my education to obtain an Associates degree in Graphic Design in Spokane, which has contributed to my skill set as well.
